An expense ratio is an ongoing annual fee charged by all funds. A load is a one-time sales charge (front-end or back-end) charged by some mutual funds. No-load funds charge zero sales fees. Most ETFs are no-load. Investors should compare total cost of ownership including both expenses and loads.
