A benchmark is a standard against which the performance of an investment or fund is measured. The most common benchmarks are market indices such as the S&P 500, the total U.S. stock market, or the Bloomberg Aggregate Bond Index. Fund managers and investors use benchmarks to evaluate whether an investment is outperforming or underperforming the broader market.
